About the World Open
The organizers claim that this event is the World's biggest open
tournament. The event is being held at the Adam's Mark Hotel, Philadelphia as it has
been for at least the last 13 years.
Perhaps the most notable features of this event are the sheer number of players and the prizes. Attendance has been running at about 1,300. This puts over 200 people in some sections. Most of the sections have a first place prize of $10,000 and place prizes down through 30th place.
The event has many features and mini events going on at the
same time. This year in addition to the traditional free game analysis, there will
be free lectures by GMs Yermolinsky, Kaidanov and Fedorowicz!
The World Open has a site that will be active during the event. It's has information
from last year and, for those of you at home, you will be able to follow the results at
the end of each round to check on those whom are playing in the event. Here's the
link for the World Open. For
other info on the World Open, you can go to the Organizers Site.
In the Club Photo Collection there are some 1996 World Open pictures if you want to see what the place looks like when it's completely over-run by chess players.
