PROPOSAL FOR MCC SUMMER 2002 SCHOLASTIC CHESS PROGRAM

Submitted by Alan Hodge

Overall Structure:

The proposed 2002 summer program will consist of four tournaments:

  1. Tournament 1: six-round Swiss tournament (two tournament games per night) to be played on June 20, June 27 and July 11 (no games on July 4)

  2. Tournament 2: six-round Swiss tournament (two tournament games per night) to be played on July 18, July 25 and August 1

  3. Tournament 3: six-round Swiss tournament (two tournament games per night) to be played on August 8, August 15 and August 22

  4. Tournament 4: four-round Swiss tournament to be played on Sunday, August 25. [need to confirm availability of venue and date] Only players who played in Tournament 1, 2 or 3 may play in Tournament 4.

Sections:

Both the number of sections and the break points will depend on the number of participants and the distribution of their ratings, but proposed sections for all four tournaments are as follows:

            Open

            Under 900

            Under 700

            Under 500

With respect to the first tournament that a player enters, his or her applicable rating will be determined as follows.

·         USCF ratings published in the June 2002 rating supplement will apply for rated players.

·         Unrated players will be assigned a rating equivalent determined by the formula ((grade+2)*100)-50. For example, a player who just completed second grade would be assigned a rating equivalent of 350; a player who just completed fifth grade would be assigned a rating equivalent of 650.

With respect to any subsequent tournament that a player enters, his or her applicable rating will be the Swis-Sys-calculated “post” rating from the last tournament he or she played in.

Players would be permitted to play up.

Time Control:

The time control for all games in all sections in all tournaments will be G/30.

Pairings:

Pairings will be normal Swiss-style pairings for all tournament games. Side games will be paired as appropriate.
